Mala - 108

Malas are used as prayer beads. Typically, a tassel at the base of the mala helps send the prayers/mantra out to the universe. There is a guru bead, a larger bead next to the tassel, and then 108 beads to use for mantra or prayer. The gemstones used to create a mala carry certain metaphysical properties such as clear quartz for clarity, amethyst for intuition, citrine for abundance, carnelian for creativity and so many more. Malas can be hand knotted between each bead, or an elastic cord can be used to wrap the mala around the wrist like a bracelet. 

A mantra is an intention- a single word or combination of words- repeated 108 times. The beads help you track the number of intentions. 108 is a very auspicious number:

The diameter of the Sun multiplied by 108 equals the distance between Sun and Earth, and the diameter of the Moon multiplied by 108 equals the distance between Earth and Moon. The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth. That is why we have 108 beads in a mala.
