Guess what? All of the flowers you'll see in these photos are from grocery store bouquets. You know the ones...they look pretty all wrapped up and then you get them home and plop them in a vase and they just don't look that great. The greenery is much too sparse and you end up with more mums than you realized. I loved it when a friend commented that she has learned how to arrange flowers by looking at flower posts from my blog.
This is the second year I have done the flowers for my mom's friend for her annual Christmas party. I prepared better this year and bought the lilies a week ahead of time so they'd open by the Sunday evening party.
I always start by separating the greens and the flowers. I bought about 6 bunches of holiday greenery for these arrangements. This year the bunches came with silver painted silver dollar eucalyptus. The drape-y greens skirt the vases and the taller greens go to the top.
After greening the vases, I started with my anchoring flowers- the lilies. Stick the flowers in at about a 45 degree angle, rather than straight up and down. I filled in more of the top with mums and then filled in with roses and alstroemeria.
The stargazer lilies were nice and full, but the white Asiatics were still closed Saturday evening. By Sunday, several more lilies bloomed in the arrangements.

This Santa head tree in the entry is always my very favorite.
I didn't get a photo of the food covered table from the party, but the food is always fabulous.
It's a toss up how I'd most like to spend a Saturday afternoon. After a long trail run or snowshoe, I am perfectly happy to be working on floral arrangements or gingerbread houses.
