Fairy Cookies
This is a post from March 2013: I took a few extra cookies I had baked the day before Easter and laid them out on the counter to see if I could come up with any non-Easter cookie designs. I could surely decorate the butterflies for spring, but what about the bunnies? Would they have to go to waste? Yeah, right.
Fairies came to mind, so I colored some royal icing blue and piped & filled the bunny heads and a couple of butterflies:
After making a couple of sketches, a fairy seemed the perfect fit for a bunny head:
After outlining, I piped a thicker consistency of royal icing on the inside of the wings and used a thin brush to try the brush embroidery technique I have seen from several cookiers; including Sweet Ambs who is hosting an April cookie contest.
She was pretty just plain white, so I set her aside to dry to start fairy #2.
Fairy #2 piped:
Brush embroidery for the wings:
She turned out pretty as well all in white:
Fairy #3- this was getting fun. I was tempted to stop with white fairies, but I really started to wonder what they would look like with a little color...
...so I squirted a little food coloring in a tray and dabbed some water and started brushing some flesh tone color.
I had to keep going, so I painted her skirt and shirt...
...and continued with fairy #2:
Oh my goodness, I didn't know how much I'd enjoy painting on cookies.
I sprayed a little silver color spray on the parchment paper and dabbed the brush into it to lightly brush the wings. Although it doesn't show up very well in the photos, it is gorgeous. The silver really highlights the wings.
The butterflies:
Same brush embroidery technique as the fairy wings:
The butterfly antennae are also highlighted with a brush of the silver color.
